How cancellation insurance works
Cancellation insurance (cancellation fee insurance) reimburses your cancellation fees if you have to cancel a trip, stay, event or course you’ve paid for, for a serious reason beyond your control — such as illness, injury or a death in the family. We reimburse cancellation fees after deducting the 10% excess, with no excess if the insured person is hospitalised or dies. The premium is 9% of the price, minimum CZK 26.
What exactly the insurance covers →Domestic and international trips, both private and business: package holidays, standalone flights, accommodation in a hotel, campsite, guesthouse or private home, spa stays, camps, outdoor school trips, ski courses, language courses and tickets to cultural and sporting events. You need a booking contract, a binding order or advance payment. Online, you can insure a price of up to CZK 500,000.
The policy terms list 14 reasons: your own illness, injury or death; illness, injury or death of a family member, a business partner or someone you’re travelling with; caring for a sick family member; a confirmed pregnancy; the death of a dog or cat; a court hearing, adoption or divorce; dismissal by your employer; a resit exam; a car accident; theft of your documents; a criminal offence; theft or natural damage at home; mandatory quarantine; and a natural disaster at your destination.
All reasons in detail →Most reasons must arise no more than 30 days before the planned departure. Illness, injury, death and pregnancy are covered even if they arise up to 180 days before departure — which is especially useful for holidays booked well in advance.
Yes. Illness, injury and death are covered not only for the insured person but also for family members — that is, a partner, children, parents, siblings, grandparents, a partner’s parents, a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law and other relatives you live with in the same household or demonstrably care for. A business partner is also covered, as is the person you booked the trip with or were going to stay with.
If, for one of the covered reasons, you start your trip late, interrupt it or end it early, and the unused services can’t be refunded any other way, we reimburse a proportionate part of the cancellation fees.
Among other things: a change of plans (you don’t want to go, you’re afraid, you don’t get time off work), health problems that existed before the insurance was taken out (except a stabilised chronic illness), events under the influence of alcohol or drugs, injuries during races and competitions, or a trip being cancelled by the carrier or organiser — in that case they refund you.
All exclusions →Yes, the terms state “COVID-19 risk included” — the illness is assessed like any other illness, and mandatory quarantine ordered by a public health officer within 2 weeks before departure is also covered. However, the pandemic itself or worries about travelling are not a reason to cancel.
Travel insurance applies during the trip — mainly medical expenses abroad. Cancellation insurance covers the situation where you can’t set off on a trip or go to an event and would lose the money you’ve paid. With us, you buy cancellation insurance on its own — you don’t have to buy travel insurance with it.
Price and payout
The premium is 9% of the total price of what you’re insuring, minimum CZK 26 per insurance policy. A CZK 1,500 ticket costs you CZK 135, a CZK 12,000 stay costs you CZK 1,080 and a CZK 40,000 package holiday costs you CZK 3,600. It’s a one-off payment.
Work out the price →We reimburse the cancellation fees — the deposit paid in advance or the price the seller didn’t refund under its terms — after deducting the 10% excess. If you get nothing back for a CZK 2,000 ticket, you’ll receive CZK 1,800. If you cancel because the insured person is hospitalised or dies, no excess applies. Cancellation fees don’t include the premium, airport taxes or fees that can be recovered.
The excess is the part of the loss you bear yourself: 10% of the payout, with no minimum amount. For a cancellation fee of CZK 10,000, the excess is CZK 1,000 and the insurance pays out CZK 9,000. If you cancel because the insured person is hospitalised (admitted to hospital for at least 24 hours) or dies, no excess applies.
The payout limit is the total price of the trip — the sum of all the services you’re insuring — up to CZK 500,000 per person and insurance policy. If you’re insuring something more expensive, write to us and we’ll prepare a personalised quote.
The premium is 9% of the price, minimum CZK 26. For a CZK 1,500 ticket you pay CZK 135, and if you cancel you get CZK 1,350 back. It makes the most sense for more expensive and multi-day events and for tickets bought well in advance.
The premium is a one-off payment. With cancellation fee insurance, you don’t have the right to withdraw from the contract without giving a reason within 14 days of taking it out. You can move the dates or cancel the policy by agreement with the insurer (travel@colonnade.cz) — the insurer is then entitled to a proportionate part of the premium.

Buying the insurance
If there are more than 30 days until the trip starts, you can take out the insurance at any time. If you buy the trip 30 days or less before it starts, the insurance must be taken out at the same time as you pay for the trip. In all cases, it only covers events that occur after it is taken out.
Trip cancellation cover applies from the day the insurance policy is concluded until the planned day of departure. Trip interruption cover applies from departure until the planned return. The insurance policy comes into existence when the premium is paid.
Not for an illness you already know about. The insurance doesn’t cover any medical condition, illness or injury that existed before it was taken out (except a stabilised chronic illness), or anything that could have been foreseen. That’s why it’s worth taking it out right when you buy, while you’re healthy.
Yes, you can also insure something that starts in a few days. If there are 30 days or less until it starts, the insurance must be taken out at the same time as you pay for the trip — i.e. on the day of purchase.
Yes. It doesn’t matter where you bought the ticket, stay or package holiday — from the organiser, at a travel agency, through a booking portal or at an online box office. A booking contract, binding order or proof of payment is enough.
Yes, you can insure up to 10 people in one order. The premium is calculated from the total price you paid for everyone, and the CZK 26 minimum applies to the whole policy, not per person.
Then only the cancellation fees of the insured person who cancelled are reimbursed — for a trip paid for jointly, their proportionate share. The exception is if you would otherwise have to travel alone: then your fellow traveller’s cancellation is covered too.
Yes, you can insure trips, stays and events in the Czech Republic and anywhere in the world. Both Czech citizens and citizens of other countries can be insured.
Some payment cards include cancellation cover, but usually with limitations — only for holidays paid for with that card, or with lower limits. Check your card’s terms. Our insurance applies regardless of how you paid.
The insurer is Colonnade Insurance S.A., which operates in the Czech Republic through its branch (Na Pankráci 1683/127, 140 00 Praha 4, Company ID 044 85 297). Meditapass is an insurance intermediary registered with the Czech National Bank and arranges the insurance for you.

If you have to cancel
Cancel the trip and all booked services with the seller as soon as possible, ask for a refund and try to keep the loss as low as you can — the insurer may reduce the payout for cancellation fees that went up because you cancelled late. Then notify the insurer of the claim without undue delay.
Step-by-step guide →Send the original cancelled tickets to the insurer at skody@colonnade.cz before the event starts. If they arrive after it has started, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payout.
The insurance policy number; your travel contract, voucher or proof of booking and payment; proof of the processed refund stating the cancellation fees; and proof of the reason for cancelling — a medical report, death certificate, police report, dismissal letter, court summons, confirmation from your school, quarantine confirmation and so on. Copies are enough; keep the originals until the investigation is over.
Without undue delay, online or by email to skody@colonnade.cz, always with your policy number. Colonnade customer centre: +420 800 700 025. We’re also happy to help you with the claim.
The insurer must complete its investigation within 3 months of the claim being reported (this can be extended by agreement) and pay out within 15 days of completing it. The more complete the documents you send, the smoother the process.
Cancellation insurance doesn’t cover that — if the carrier or provider changes or cancels the trip, they have to refund you. Package holidays are also protected by tour operators’ statutory insolvency insurance. Cancellation insurance is for situations where you can’t go.
A cancelled or significantly delayed flight is the airline’s responsibility under European rules (EU Regulation 261/2004) — through a refund, an alternative flight or compensation. Cancellation insurance covers situations where you can’t fly.
Specific situations
Yes. You insure the amount you would lose if you cancelled. If your booking has free cancellation, you don’t need insurance until then — it’s mainly worth it for non-refundable and partially refundable rates.
Accommodation cancellation insurance →Yes, if your employer dismisses you, you’re entitled to unemployment benefit and you had no reason to expect the dismissal when you booked. The notice must come no later than 30 days before departure. If you resign yourself, it isn’t covered.
The insurance covers a resit of a university or similar exam — i.e. a resit date that falls during the trip or within 7 days after the planned return.
The insurance applies if your identity documents, or those of other insured persons, are stolen in the last 7 days before the planned departure. The theft must be reported to the police and documented with a police report.
