Accommodation

Accommodation cancellation insurance

Non-refundable rates are often much cheaper — but if you can’t make it, you lose the whole amount. Cancellation insurance reimburses it after deducting the 10% excess. It’s suitable for hotels, cottages, apartments and spa stays, whether you booked through Booking.com, Airbnb or directly.

  • 9% of the price, minimum CZK 26
  • If you cancel, cancellation fees back after deducting the 10% excess
  • Standalone, no travel insurance needed

Typical situations

When cancellation insurance comes in handy

  • A non-refundable rate and an illness

You saved money with a non-refundable rate, but the day before arrival you come down with a fever. The hotel won’t refund anything.

  • A cottage with friends

Renting a cottage for a week is expensive and paid for in advance. If you drop out because of an injury, the insurance covers your share of the jointly paid price.

  • A spa weekend for two

A gift stay on fixed dates. If your partner falls ill, the insurance also covers your cancellation — as long as you’re both insured.

  • Damage at home

A burglary or robbery at home, or major natural damage (over CZK 200,000) just before departure — the insurance also covers situations where you have to stay at home.

What the insurance covers

14 reasons to cancel

In detail, including exclusions
  • Your illness, injury or death

You fall ill or get injured so that you can’t go.

  • Illness, injury or death of someone close

Family, a business partner, or the person you’re travelling with or staying with.

  • Caring for a sick family member

You have to look after someone close who isn’t travelling with you.

  • Confirmed pregnancy

A pregnancy confirmed after the insurance was taken out, where the doctor advises against travelling.

  • Death of a pet

    Your dog or cat dies.

  • Court, adoption or divorce

A witness summons, adoption or divorce proceedings during the trip.

  • Dismissal by your employer

You’re dismissed when you didn’t expect it.

  • Resit exam

A resit exam during the trip or shortly after it.

  • Car accident

The car you were going to travel in can’t be driven after an accident.

  • Stolen documents

Your documents are stolen in the last week before departure.

  • Victim of a crime

You or a family member become the victim of a crime.

  • Theft or damage at home

A burglary, robbery or major natural damage where you live.

  • Mandatory quarantine

A public health officer orders you into quarantine just before departure.

  • Natural disaster at the destination

A fire, flood or windstorm where you’re going.

Keep in mind

What to watch out for

  • Free cancellation

Does your booking have free cancellation? You don’t need insurance until the free cancellation deadline. It’s mainly worth it for non-refundable rates.

  • Proof of cancellation

For private rentals, ask for written confirmation of the cancellation stating the amount that won’t be refunded (a cancellation invoice).

  • A cottage from friends

Cash payment without a contract or receipt is hard to prove. It makes sense to insure bookings with proof of payment.

  • Cancellation by the host

If the hotel or landlord cancels your booking, they have to refund you — cancellation insurance doesn’t cover that.

Stories

What it would look like in practice

  • AccommodationExample scenario

A burglary two days before a mountain trip

The Novák family · A week in a chalet in the Alps, non-refundable booking

The Nováks booked a chalet on a non-refundable rate — it was a third cheaper. Two days before departure, their flat was burgled and the police needed their cooperation. They couldn’t leave.

Questions

Insurance questions: accommodation

All questions →
  • Yes. It doesn’t matter which platform you booked through. You insure the amount you would lose if you cancelled, and if you make a claim, you provide confirmation of the booking and the cancellation.

  • It makes sense to insure what you could lose — a deposit you’ve paid or the amount the host will charge you if you cancel. If you don’t pay anything in advance and can cancel for free, you don’t need insurance.

  • You can insure everyone who is going (up to 10 people), and the premium is calculated from the total price. Cancellation by any of the insured persons is then covered — for a jointly paid stay, their proportionate share.

  • We reimburse the cancellation fees — the deposit paid in advance or the price the seller didn’t refund under its terms — after deducting the 10% excess. If you get nothing back for a CZK 2,000 ticket, you’ll receive CZK 1,800. If you cancel because the insured person is hospitalised or dies, no excess applies. Cancellation fees don’t include the premium, airport taxes or fees that can be recovered.

  • If there are more than 30 days until the trip starts, you can take out the insurance at any time. If you buy the trip 30 days or less before it starts, the insurance must be taken out at the same time as you pay for the trip. In all cases, it only covers events that occur after it is taken out.

  • Among other things: a change of plans (you don’t want to go, you’re afraid, you don’t get time off work), health problems that existed before the insurance was taken out (except a stabilised chronic illness), events under the influence of alcohol or drugs, injuries during races and competitions, or a trip being cancelled by the carrier or organiser — in that case they refund you.
