Flight cancellation insurance

Cheap flights are usually non-refundable — if you fall ill, you lose them. Cancellation insurance reimburses what the airline won’t refund after deducting the 10% excess. It’s suitable for flights on their own or for an independent trip with accommodation. It costs 9% of the price and you buy it on its own.

  • 9% of the price, minimum CZK 26
  • If you cancel, cancellation fees back after deducting the 10% excess
  • Standalone, no travel insurance needed

Typical situations

When cancellation insurance comes in handy

  • Illness before the flight

A fever or bronchitis, and the doctor advises against flying. You’d lose the full price of the non-refundable ticket.

  • A stolen passport the day before the flight

If your identity documents are stolen in the last 7 days before the flight, the insurance covers the cancellation. You prove the theft with a report from the Police of the Czech Republic.

  • Looking after loved ones

Your partner, child or parent falls seriously ill, or you have to look after someone in your family, and you have to stay at home.

Keep in mind

What to watch out for

  • Cancelled or delayed flight

This is the airline’s responsibility under EU Regulation 261/2004 — through a refund, rerouting or compensation. Cancellation insurance is for situations where you can’t fly.

  • Airport taxes

The insurance doesn’t cover airport taxes and other fees that can be recovered. If you don’t fly, ask the airline to refund them.

  • Changing the name or date

Some airlines let you change the name or date of the flight for a fee. If that’s possible, the loss is just that fee.

A stolen wallet the evening before the flight

Lucie, 29 · Flights and an apartment for a friend’s wedding in Italy

The evening before her flight, Lucie’s wallet was stolen on the tram, along with her ID card and passport. There was no way to get a replacement document by morning, so she couldn’t fly. Both the flights and the apartment were non-refundable.

Questions

Insurance questions: flights

All questions →
  • A cancelled or significantly delayed flight is the airline’s responsibility under EU Regulation 261/2004. Cancellation insurance covers situations where you can’t fly — because of illness, injury, stolen documents and the other reasons in the terms.

  • Yes. Add up the flights, accommodation and other non-refundable services and insure the total, up to CZK 500,000.

  • Yes, if they’re part of the price you paid and the airline doesn’t refund them when you cancel.

  • We reimburse the cancellation fees — the deposit paid in advance or the price the seller didn’t refund under its terms — after deducting the 10% excess. If you get nothing back for a CZK 2,000 ticket, you’ll receive CZK 1,800. If you cancel because the insured person is hospitalised or dies, no excess applies. Cancellation fees don’t include the premium, airport taxes or fees that can be recovered.

  • If there are more than 30 days until the trip starts, you can take out the insurance at any time. If you buy the trip 30 days or less before it starts, the insurance must be taken out at the same time as you pay for the trip. In all cases, it only covers events that occur after it is taken out.

  • Among other things: a change of plans (you don’t want to go, you’re afraid, you don’t get time off work), health problems that existed before the insurance was taken out (except a stabilised chronic illness), events under the influence of alcohol or drugs, injuries during races and competitions, or a trip being cancelled by the carrier or organiser — in that case they refund you.
