Package holiday cancellation insurance

If you can’t go because of illness, injury or another serious reason, the tour operator keeps a cancellation fee — just before departure, it can easily be the full price. Cancellation insurance reimburses it after deducting the 10% excess, or in full if the insured person is hospitalised or dies. It costs 9% of the holiday price and you buy it on its own, without travel insurance.

  • 9% of the price, minimum CZK 26
  • If you cancel, cancellation fees back after deducting the 10% excess
  • Standalone, no travel insurance needed

What you can insure

What the insurance is good for

  • Package holidays from tour operators and agencies, in the Czech Republic and abroad
  • Non-refundable flights, ferries and train or coach tickets
  • Independent trips — flights, accommodation and a hire car together
  • Sightseeing, ski, cycling and sports holidays
  • Early-booking and last-minute offers

Typical situations

When cancellation insurance comes in handy

  • Illness just before the flight

Flu, tonsillitis or appendicitis a week before departure. The doctor advises against travelling and the tour operator keeps most of the price.

  • A last-minute injury

A broken leg playing sport or a fall on an icy pavement. The holiday would be dangerous or impossible for you.

  • Looking after loved ones

Your partner, child, parent or sibling falls seriously ill or gets injured — or you have to look after someone in your family. The insurance covers your nearest and dearest too.

  • If something happens at home

A burglary or robbery at home, or major damage after a natural event (over CZK 200,000) just before departure.

What the insurance covers

14 reasons to cancel

In detail, including exclusions
  • Your illness, injury or death

You fall ill or get injured so that you can’t go.

  • Illness, injury or death of someone close

Family, a business partner, or the person you’re travelling with or staying with.

  • Caring for a sick family member

You have to look after someone close who isn’t travelling with you.

  • Confirmed pregnancy

A pregnancy confirmed after the insurance was taken out, where the doctor advises against travelling.

  • Death of a pet

    Your dog or cat dies.

  • Court, adoption or divorce

A witness summons, adoption or divorce proceedings during the trip.

  • Dismissal by your employer

You’re dismissed when you didn’t expect it.

Your documents are stolen in the last week before departure.

  • Victim of a crime

You or a family member become the victim of a crime.

  • Theft or damage at home

A burglary, robbery or major natural damage where you live.

  • Mandatory quarantine

A public health officer orders you into quarantine just before departure.

  • Natural disaster at the destination

A fire, flood or windstorm where you’re going.

Keep in mind

What to watch out for

  • Tour operator insolvency

If the tour operator goes bust, your money is refunded by its statutory insolvency insurance — not by cancellation insurance.

  • Holiday cancelled by the operator

If the tour operator cancels the holiday (too few participants, unrest at the destination), it has to refund you itself.

  • Cancelled or delayed flight

This is the airline’s responsibility under EU Regulation 261/2004. Cancellation insurance is for situations where you can’t fly.

  • Limit of CZK 500,000

The payout limit is the price of the holiday, up to CZK 500,000 per person and policy. For more expensive holidays, write to us for a personalised quote.

  • When the reason arises

Most reasons must arise no more than 30 days before departure. Illness, injury, death and pregnancy are covered up to 180 days before — important for early booking.

Stories

What it would look like in practice

  • Trips and holidaysExample scenario

Appendicitis four days before the flight

Jana and Petr · A week’s package holiday in Egypt for two

In January, Jana and Petr bought a beach holiday. Four days before the flight, Jana was taken to hospital with appendicitis and spent five days there. The tour operator kept 90% of the price. Both of them were insured, and Petr is Jana’s partner, so the cancellation was covered for both.

Lucie, 29 · Flights and an apartment for a friend’s wedding in Italy

The evening before her flight, Lucie’s wallet was stolen on the tram, along with her ID card and passport. There was no way to get a replacement document by morning, so she couldn’t fly. Both the flights and the apartment were non-refundable.

Questions

Insurance questions: holidays and trips

All questions →
  • No. With us, you buy cancellation insurance on its own. Travel insurance (medical expenses abroad) is a different product that covers situations during the trip.

  • Insure the total price of the holiday, even if you’ve only paid a deposit so far. The cancellation fee is calculated from the full price, and the insurance then covers the whole amount.

  • You can insure everyone who is going — up to 10 people in one order. If someone in your family or the person you booked the trip with falls ill, the insurance also covers your cancellation. If only one of you cancels, their share is reimbursed — the whole cancellation only if you would otherwise have to travel alone.

  • Yes. Add up the flights, accommodation and other non-refundable services and insure the total — the payout limit is the total price of the trip. If you cancel, you provide the cancellation fees from each seller. Airport taxes and fees that can be recovered aren’t included.

  • We reimburse the cancellation fees — the deposit paid in advance or the price the seller didn’t refund under its terms — after deducting the 10% excess. If you get nothing back for a CZK 2,000 ticket, you’ll receive CZK 1,800. If you cancel because the insured person is hospitalised or dies, no excess applies. Cancellation fees don’t include the premium, airport taxes or fees that can be recovered.

  • If there are more than 30 days until the trip starts, you can take out the insurance at any time. If you buy the trip 30 days or less before it starts, the insurance must be taken out at the same time as you pay for the trip. In all cases, it only covers events that occur after it is taken out.

  • Among other things: a change of plans (you don’t want to go, you’re afraid, you don’t get time off work), health problems that existed before the insurance was taken out (except a stabilised chronic illness), events under the influence of alcohol or drugs, injuries during races and competitions, or a trip being cancelled by the carrier or organiser — in that case they refund you.
