Ski course and school ski trip cancellation insurance

A school ski trip or ski course is paid for in the autumn and takes place in winter, in the season of flu and injuries. If your child can’t go because of illness or injury, cancellation insurance reimburses the cancellation fee after deducting the 10% excess, or in full if they’re hospitalised. It costs 9% of the course price, and you take it out as the parent.

  • 9% of the price, minimum CZK 26
  • If you cancel, cancellation fees back after deducting the 10% excess
  • Standalone, no travel insurance needed

Typical situations

When cancellation insurance comes in handy

  • Flu in the week of departure

The ski trip leaves on Sunday, and on Wednesday the fever arrives. The doctor won’t let your child go to the mountains, and the school only refunds what it hasn’t paid out yet.

  • A fracture on the ice rink

A cast a week before departure means the end of the ski trip. The insurance covers injuries during ordinary sport.

  • Quarantine before departure

A public health officer orders your child into quarantine a few days before departure. Mandatory quarantine ordered within 2 weeks before departure is a covered reason.

  • A serious illness in the family

Someone in your close family falls seriously ill or dies, and your child stays at home with you. The insurance covers that too.

What the insurance covers

14 reasons to cancel

In detail, including exclusions
  • Your illness, injury or death

You fall ill or get injured so that you can’t go.

  • Illness, injury or death of someone close

Family, a business partner, or the person you’re travelling with or staying with.

  • Caring for a sick family member

You have to look after someone close who isn’t travelling with you.

  • Confirmed pregnancy

A pregnancy confirmed after the insurance was taken out, where the doctor advises against travelling.

  • Death of a pet

    Your dog or cat dies.

  • Court, adoption or divorce

A witness summons, adoption or divorce proceedings during the trip.

  • Dismissal by your employer

You’re dismissed when you didn’t expect it.

  • Resit exam

A resit exam during the trip or shortly after it.

  • Car accident

The car you were going to travel in can’t be driven after an accident.

  • Stolen documents

Your documents are stolen in the last week before departure.

  • Victim of a crime

You or a family member become the victim of a crime.

  • Theft or damage at home

A burglary, robbery or major natural damage where you live.

  • Mandatory quarantine

A public health officer orders you into quarantine just before departure.

  • Natural disaster at the destination

A fire, flood or windstorm where you’re going.

Keep in mind

What to watch out for

  • Races and competitions

The insurance doesn’t cover injuries during races and competitions or during professional sport. Training and recreational sport aren’t affected by this exclusion.

  • The parent is the policyholder

The insurance is taken out by an adult parent or legal guardian, and the child is the insured person. It’s always taken out for the specific ski trip you’ve paid for.

  • Illnesses already under way

The insurance only covers events that occur after it’s taken out. If you take it out on a day when your child already has a temperature, the insurer won’t pay.

  • A replacement

Some schools and clubs can pass the place on to another child. Then the cancellation fee is dropped or reduced — ask before you confirm the cancellation.

A broken arm five days before a school ski trip

Vojta, 12, and his parents · A school ski course in the Alps

Vojta had been looking forward to the ski trip all winter. Five days before departure, he fell on the stairs during break and ended up in a cast. The school refunded only 30% of the price; the rest had already been paid to the coach company and the accommodation.

Questions

Insurance questions: school ski trips and ski courses

All questions →
  • As soon as you pay, while your child is healthy — the insurance only covers events that occur after it’s taken out. If there are more than 30 days until departure, you can take it out at any time; later, only together with the payment. Illness and injury are covered if they arise no more than 180 days before departure.

    What the insurance costs →
  • Yes. An injury during ordinary sport — in PE, on skates or at training — is a covered reason for cancellation. The exclusion applies to injuries during races and competitions, during professional sport and on expeditions.

  • Yes. You insure a cottage, apartment or mountain holiday in the same way, and cancellation because of illness or injury of anyone in the insured family is covered too.

Holiday cancellation insurance in the Czech Republic →
  • The insurance policy number, the application form or proof of payment, the school’s or organiser’s confirmation of the cancellation stating the cancellation fee, and a medical report with the diagnosis and length of treatment.

How to report a claim →
  • We reimburse the cancellation fees — the deposit paid in advance or the price the seller didn’t refund under its terms — after deducting the 10% excess. If you get nothing back for a CZK 2,000 ticket, you’ll receive CZK 1,800. If you cancel because the insured person is hospitalised or dies, no excess applies. Cancellation fees don’t include the premium, airport taxes or fees that can be recovered.

  • If there are more than 30 days until the trip starts, you can take out the insurance at any time. If you buy the trip 30 days or less before it starts, the insurance must be taken out at the same time as you pay for the trip. In all cases, it only covers events that occur after it is taken out.

Rules and examples with dates →
  • Among other things: a change of plans (you don’t want to go, you’re afraid, you don’t get time off work), health problems that existed before the insurance was taken out (except a stabilised chronic illness), events under the influence of alcohol or drugs, injuries during races and competitions, or a trip being cancelled by the carrier or organiser — in that case they refund you.
