Holidays in Czechia

Cancellation insurance for holidays and stays in the Czech Republic

On holiday in the Czech Republic, necessary treatment is paid for by your health insurance company, so what you mainly need to protect is the money you’ve paid in advance. You can insure a guesthouse, cottage, hotel, wellness stay, plus activities and tickets, all together in one policy. If you can’t go because of illness, injury or a serious event in the family, we reimburse the cancellation fee after deducting the 10% excess. The insurance costs 9% of the price.

  • 9% of the price, minimum CZK 26
  • If you cancel, cancellation fees back after deducting the 10% excess
  • Standalone, no travel insurance needed

What you can insure

What the insurance is good for

  • A week in a guesthouse, hotel or cottage, including the deposit you’ve paid
  • The mountains in winter: accommodation, ski passes and ski school paid in advance
  • Summer by the water: campsites, cabins and canoeing trips with equipment hire
  • Domestic package holidays from tour operators and sightseeing stays
  • Christmas, New Year’s Eve and long weekends
  • Tickets and activities that are part of the stay

Typical situations

When cancellation insurance comes in handy

  • New Year’s Eve in the mountains

You paid for a cottage for New Year’s Eve in September. A week before you leave, you get pneumonia and won’t be going to the mountains.

  • A sick child before a family holiday

A guesthouse in the Šumava for four, and three days before departure your younger daughter has tonsillitis. A child’s illness is a covered reason for the parents and siblings too, if they’re insured.

  • A burglary at home

The day before you leave, your flat is burgled and the police need you to stay. That’s a covered reason too.

  • Dismissal before the summer

Your employer dismisses you and you cancel your holiday. It’s covered if the dismissal comes no more than 30 days before departure and you’re entitled to unemployment benefit.

What the insurance covers

14 reasons to cancel

In detail, including exclusions
  • Your illness, injury or death

You fall ill or get injured so that you can’t go.

  • Illness, injury or death of someone close

Family, a business partner, or the person you’re travelling with or staying with.

  • Caring for a sick family member

You have to look after someone close who isn’t travelling with you.

  • Confirmed pregnancy

A pregnancy confirmed after the insurance was taken out, where the doctor advises against travelling.

  • Death of a pet

    Your dog or cat dies.

  • Court, adoption or divorce

A witness summons, adoption or divorce proceedings during the trip.

  • Dismissal by your employer

You’re dismissed when you didn’t expect it.

  • Resit exam

A resit exam during the trip or shortly after it.

  • Car accident

The car you were going to travel in can’t be driven after an accident.

  • Stolen documents

Your documents are stolen in the last week before departure.

  • Victim of a crime

You or a family member become the victim of a crime.

  • Theft or damage at home

A burglary, robbery or major natural damage where you live.

  • Mandatory quarantine

A public health officer orders you into quarantine just before departure.

  • Natural disaster at the destination

A fire, flood or windstorm where you’re going.

Keep in mind

What to watch out for

  • Weather and closed ski slopes

Lack of snow, rain or worries about the journey aren’t covered by the insurance. Sort out cancellations due to the weather with the accommodation provider.

  • A deposit with no receipt

A cash payment to people you know is hard to prove. The insurance is always taken out for that specific booking, so ask for a booking confirmation and proof of payment.

  • Cancellation by the accommodation provider

If the guesthouse or organiser cancels the stay, they have to refund you. Cancellation insurance doesn’t deal with that.

  • Cancel as soon as possible

Cancellation fees rise as your arrival date approaches. The insurer may reduce the payout if the fee would have been lower had you cancelled in time.

Stories

What it would look like in practice

  • AccommodationExample scenario

A broken arm before a spa weekend

Markéta and Jakub · A spa weekend for two, non-refundable booking

Jakub got a weekend at a spa hotel as an anniversary present. A week before, Markéta slipped on the stairs and broke her arm. They were both insured, and the hotel didn’t refund anything.

Vojta, 12, and his parents · A school ski course in the Alps

Questions

Insurance questions: holidays in the Czech Republic

All questions →
  • Necessary treatment in the Czech Republic is paid for by your health insurance company, so you don’t usually need medical expenses cover as you would abroad. But it’s worth protecting the money you’ve paid in advance. You can take out cancellation insurance on its own, without travel insurance.

  • Yes. Add up everything you’ve paid for the holiday in advance that wouldn’t be refunded if you cancelled — accommodation, ski passes, ski school, tickets — and insure the total, up to CZK 500,000 online. The premium is 9% of the price, at least CZK 26 per policy.

    What the insurance costs →
  • Insure the total price of the stay, even if you’ve only paid a deposit so far. Under its terms, the accommodation provider may charge more than the deposit for a late cancellation, and the insurance then covers the full amount. If you can cancel free of charge, you don’t need the insurance.

Accommodation cancellation insurance (Booking.com, Airbnb) →
  • Yes, if you pay for it yourself — a self-paid stay, a wellness weekend or accommodation with contributory spa care. Comprehensive spa care is paid for by the health insurance company.

    Spa cancellation insurance →
  • No. The weather, lack of snow or worries about the journey aren’t covered. It covers serious reasons on your side: illness, injury or death in the family, dismissal by your employer, a burglary at home and other reasons in the policy terms.

    What the insurance covers →
  • You can insure everyone who’s going — up to 10 people in one order. A cancellation by any of the insured people is covered; for a jointly paid stay, their proportionate share. If only one person can’t go, their share is reimbursed.

How to report a claim →
  • We reimburse the cancellation fees — the deposit paid in advance or the price the seller didn’t refund under its terms — after deducting the 10% excess. If you get nothing back for a CZK 2,000 ticket, you’ll receive CZK 1,800. If you cancel because the insured person is hospitalised or dies, no excess applies. Cancellation fees don’t include the premium, airport taxes or fees that can be recovered.

  • If there are more than 30 days until the trip starts, you can take out the insurance at any time. If you buy the trip 30 days or less before it starts, the insurance must be taken out at the same time as you pay for the trip. In all cases, it only covers events that occur after it is taken out.

Rules and examples with dates →
  • Among other things: a change of plans (you don’t want to go, you’re afraid, you don’t get time off work), health problems that existed before the insurance was taken out (except a stabilised chronic illness), events under the influence of alcohol or drugs, injuries during races and competitions, or a trip being cancelled by the carrier or organiser — in that case they refund you.
