Spa stay cancellation insurance

What makes sense to insure is what you pay the spa yourself: a self-paid or wellness stay and, with contributory spa care, your accommodation and meals. Comprehensive spa care is paid for by the health insurance company. If you can’t start your stay because of illness, injury or a serious event in the family, we reimburse the cancellation fee after deducting the 10% excess. The insurance costs 9% of the price of the stay, at least CZK 26.

  • 9% of the price, minimum CZK 26
  • If you cancel, cancellation fees back after deducting the 10% excess
  • Standalone, no travel insurance needed

What you can insure

What the insurance is good for

  • Self-paid treatment and relaxation stays at spas in the Czech Republic and abroad
  • Accommodation and meals you pay for yourself with contributory spa care
  • Wellness weekends and hotel stays with treatments
  • A stay from a gift voucher, once you’ve booked specific dates
  • The stay of a companion who pays for it themselves
  • Extra charges paid in advance with comprehensive care, such as booking your own dates
Example calculation

A week-long relaxation stay for two for CZK 28,000, cancelled 10 days before it starts

Typical situations

When cancellation insurance comes in handy

  • A fever a week before your stay

You’ve paid for your stay, but a week before it starts you get flu and your doctor advises against travelling. Under its terms, the spa keeps part of the price.

  • An injury that rules out treatments

A broken arm or a sprained ankle: no pool, massages or exercise. You have to cancel the stay.

  • Caring for a sick family member

A parent you look after suddenly falls seriously ill and you can’t go. The insurance also covers illness and injury of family members.

  • A spa stay as a gift for your parents

You gave your parents a week at a spa, and just before it starts one of them falls ill. If they’re both insured, cancellation is covered for both of them.

Example: Lázně Bechyně cancellation terms for self-paying guests and contributory care

28 or more days before the startno fee

Keep in mind

What to watch out for

  • Comprehensive care is paid by the health insurer

With comprehensive spa care, the health insurance company pays for treatment, accommodation and meals at the standard level. It only makes sense to insure what you’ve paid the spa in advance yourself.

  • The illness you’re going to treat

Cancellation because of a medical condition that already existed before the insurance was taken out isn’t covered. A stabilised chronic illness is an exception — details in the questions below.

  • Cancel as soon as possible

Spa cancellation fees rise as the start of your stay approaches. The insurer may reduce the payout if the fee would have been lower had you cancelled in time.

  • A voucher with no dates

You can’t insure a gift voucher without booked dates. The insurance is always taken out for that specific booking — here, a stay with a start date.

A broken arm before a spa weekend

Markéta and Jakub · A spa weekend for two, non-refundable booking

Jakub got a weekend at a spa hotel as an anniversary present. A week before, Markéta slipped on the stairs and broke her arm. They were both insured, and the hotel didn’t refund anything.

Questions

Insurance questions: spas and wellness

All questions →
  • With comprehensive spa care, the health insurance company pays for treatment, accommodation and meals at the standard level, so you don’t need to insure the stay itself. You can insure whatever extra you’ve paid the spa in advance that wouldn’t be refunded if you cancelled — such as a non-refundable fee for booking your own dates.

  • With contributory care, the health insurance company only pays for treatment, and you pay for accommodation and meals yourself. That’s exactly the amount you can insure. If you can’t start your stay because of illness or injury, we reimburse the cancellation fee the spa charges you under its terms after deducting the 10% excess. If a companion who pays for their own stay is going with you, enter them as another insured person.

How to report a claim →
  • Cancellation because of a medical condition that already existed before the insurance was taken out isn’t covered. The exception is a stabilised chronic illness: under the policy terms, an illness where nothing in the 6 months before departure suggested that you wouldn’t be able to go or that you’d need a doctor, a change of medication or hospitalisation. A new illness or injury unrelated to your diagnosis is covered, though — such as flu or a fracture.

What the insurance doesn’t cover →
  • The policyholder and the insured persons don’t have to be the same people. You take out and pay for the insurance, and enter your parents as the insured persons. It then covers cancellation if either of them falls ill or gets injured — and if they’re both insured, the other one’s cancellation too. The premium is 9% of the price of the stay, at least CZK 26 per policy.

    What the insurance costs →
  • Only once you’ve booked specific dates with it. The insurance is always taken out for that specific booking and covers situations before the planned start. If there are more than 30 days until the start, you can take it out at any time.

Accommodation and wellness cancellation insurance →
  • We reimburse the cancellation fees — the deposit paid in advance or the price the seller didn’t refund under its terms — after deducting the 10% excess. If you get nothing back for a CZK 2,000 ticket, you’ll receive CZK 1,800. If you cancel because the insured person is hospitalised or dies, no excess applies. Cancellation fees don’t include the premium, airport taxes or fees that can be recovered.

  • If there are more than 30 days until the trip starts, you can take out the insurance at any time. If you buy the trip 30 days or less before it starts, the insurance must be taken out at the same time as you pay for the trip. In all cases, it only covers events that occur after it is taken out.

Rules and examples with dates →
  • Among other things: a change of plans (you don’t want to go, you’re afraid, you don’t get time off work), health problems that existed before the insurance was taken out (except a stabilised chronic illness), events under the influence of alcohol or drugs, injuries during races and competitions, or a trip being cancelled by the carrier or organiser — in that case they refund you.
