Pregnancy and trip cancellation: when the insurance pays

When cancellation insurance reimburses a trip cancelled because of pregnancy, when it doesn’t and what to prove. Based on the policy terms, without medical advice.

Short answer: Cancellation insurance pays if your pregnancy is confirmed only after you took out the insurance and your doctor advises against the trip for medical reasons. It reimburses the cancellation fee after deducting the 10% excess. A confirmed pregnancy is covered if it’s confirmed no more than 180 days before departure. The insurance doesn’t pay cancellation fees connected with a pregnancy after the 26th week.

One-minute summary

  • The covered reason is a pregnancy confirmed after the insurance was taken out, if your doctor advises against the trip for medical reasons.
  • Being pregnant isn’t enough on its own. What counts is your doctor’s written recommendation.
  • Events connected with a pregnancy after the 26th week are excluded.
  • This reason doesn’t apply to a pregnancy you already knew about when you took out the insurance.
  • It’s worth insuring as soon as you’ve paid for the trip, not only when something changes.

When cancellation insurance pays

The policy terms list pregnancy among the covered reasons. But three things have to apply at the same time:

  1. Your pregnancy is confirmed only after you took out the insurance.
  2. Your doctor advises against the trip for medical reasons and states this in a medical report.
  3. The pregnancy is confirmed no more than 180 days before departure. The same time limit applies as for illness and injury.

An example from the policy terms: two months before a long-haul trip, you find out you’re expecting a baby, and your doctor advises against the trip because of the risks. The insurance then reimburses the cancellation fee after deducting the 10% excess.

Whether the trip is advisable or not is for your doctor to decide. We don’t give medical advice, and the insurance doesn’t pay just because you decide not to travel. Worry about travelling isn’t a covered reason.

After the 26th week of pregnancy

The exclusions in the policy terms include events connected with a pregnancy after the 26th week. They also cover a voluntary termination of pregnancy within 3 months before departure.

Planning a trip for after the 26th week? Bear in mind that cancellation for reasons connected with the pregnancy won’t be covered. Other reasons still apply, such as illness or injury of someone in the family. All the exclusions are on the what the insurance doesn’t cover page.

Airlines have their own rules for pregnant passengers, such as a doctor’s certificate from a certain week. These aren’t part of the policy terms — check them with your airline.

If you already know you’re pregnant when you take out the insurance

The covered reason applies to a pregnancy confirmed only after the insurance was taken out. If you know about it in advance, this reason doesn’t apply. The insurer may assess problems connected with the pregnancy as a medical condition that already existed before the insurance was taken out, and the insurance doesn’t cover that.

But the insurance still covers the other reasons, such as illness, injury or death in the family, dismissal by your employer or a burglary at home. If you’re not sure how your situation would be assessed, write to us at tomas@meditapass.cz before taking out the insurance.

Partner and fellow travellers

If only the insured woman cancels the trip, the insurance reimburses her cancellation fee. Fellow travellers have their cancellation reimbursed if they would otherwise have to travel alone — the policy terms state this explicitly. The insurance is always taken out for a specific booking. You can insure a package holiday, a flight or accommodation you’ve paid for. More on the package holiday cancellation insurance page; you can work out the premium in the calculator.

What to prove

  • a medical confirmation of the pregnancy and that the doctor advised against the trip for medical reasons,
  • the contract or proof of the booking and payment for the trip,
  • the seller’s statement of the cancellation fee.

The confirmation can’t be issued by a doctor who is a close relative of yours. Cancel the trip as soon as possible, because the cancellation fee rises as departure approaches. Report the claim to the insurer without undue delay — the process is on the how to make a claim page.

Frequently asked questions

Does cancellation insurance cover pregnancy?

Yes, if your pregnancy is confirmed after you took out the insurance and your doctor advises against the trip for medical reasons. The insurance doesn’t pay cancellation fees connected with a pregnancy after the 26th week.

Can I insure a holiday when I’m already pregnant?

You can insure it, and the insurance covers the other reasons, such as illness or injury in the family. But a pregnancy you knew about in advance isn’t a covered reason.

Does the doctor have to forbid the trip?

No. Under the policy terms, it’s enough that the doctor advised against the trip for medical reasons. But it has to be in writing, in a medical report.

Does the insurance cover cancelling if I’m afraid to travel?

No. Fear of travelling is excluded. What counts is your doctor’s recommendation.
