Language study trip cancellation insurance

A language study trip abroad is made up of a course, accommodation with a host family or in student halls, and transport — and each part has its own cancellation terms. You can insure everything together in one policy. If you can’t go because of illness, injury or dismissal by your employer, we reimburse the cancellation fees after deducting the 10% excess. The insurance costs 9% of the price.

  • 9% of the price, minimum CZK 26
  • If you cancel, cancellation fees back after deducting the 10% excess
  • Standalone, no travel insurance needed

What you can insure

What the insurance is good for

  • Course fees at a language school abroad
  • Accommodation with a host family, in student halls or in a residence
  • A flight or coach ticket, if paid for in advance
  • Summer language study trips for students and teenagers
  • Stays for adults, such as language exam preparation courses

Typical situations

When cancellation insurance comes in handy

  • Dismissed before departure

Your employer makes your position redundant, and a month in Ireland suddenly makes no sense. Dismissal by your employer is covered if it comes no more than 30 days before departure and you’re entitled to unemployment benefit.

  • An injury a week before the flight

Your fifteen-year-old son falls off his bike and ends up in a cast. The course, the host family and the flight are all lost at once.

  • A resit exam

The university schedules a resit during the stay or within 7 days after your return. The insurance covers that too.

  • A stolen passport

Your documents are stolen a few days before the flight. Theft of documents within 7 days before departure is a covered reason.

Example: cancelling a study stay abroad with Student Agency (terms and conditions from 1 August 2026)
When you cancelCancellation fee
more than 30 days before the startup to 20% of the price of the stay
30–5 days before the startup to 50% of the price of the stay
less than 4 days before the start or after itup to 100% of the price of the stay

The agency charges up to 100% of the price of add-on services at any stage. Other agencies and schools have their own terms — you’ll find them in your contract.

What the insurance covers

14 reasons to cancel

In detail, including exclusions
  • Your illness, injury or death

You fall ill or get injured so that you can’t go.

  • Illness, injury or death of someone close

Family, a business partner, or the person you’re travelling with or staying with.

  • Caring for a sick family member

You have to look after someone close who isn’t travelling with you.

  • Confirmed pregnancy

A pregnancy confirmed after the insurance was taken out, where the doctor advises against travelling.

  • Death of a pet

    Your dog or cat dies.

  • Court, adoption or divorce

A witness summons, adoption or divorce proceedings during the trip.

  • Dismissal by your employer

You’re dismissed when you didn’t expect it.

  • Resit exam

A resit exam during the trip or shortly after it.

  • Car accident

The car you were going to travel in can’t be driven after an accident.

  • Stolen documents

Your documents are stolen in the last week before departure.

  • Victim of a crime

You or a family member become the victim of a crime.

  • Theft or damage at home

A burglary, robbery or major natural damage where you live.

  • Mandatory quarantine

A public health officer orders you into quarantine just before departure.

  • Natural disaster at the destination

A fire, flood or windstorm where you’re going.

Keep in mind

What to watch out for

  • Each part has different terms

The school, the accommodation and the carrier each have their own cancellation terms. Cancel everything as soon as possible and get confirmation from each of them of how much they refund.

  • A student under 18

The insurance is taken out by an adult parent or legal guardian, and the student is the insured person. It’s always taken out for that specific booking of the stay.

  • A refused visa

A refused visa isn’t one of the reasons the insurance covers. Bear that in mind if you pay for the stay before you have your visa.

  • Resigning yourself

The insurance only covers dismissal by your employer. If you end your employment yourself, it isn’t covered.

Stories

What it would look like in practice

  • Courses and educationExample scenario

Dismissed three weeks before a language course

    Martin, 31 · A four-week language course in Malta

Martin had planned a month of English in Malta. Three weeks before it started, his employer cut his position and gave him notice, which he couldn’t have expected when he booked. He had to cancel the course, and the school kept half the price under its terms.

Questions

Insurance questions: language study trips

All questions →
  • Yes. Add up the course fees, the host family or student halls accommodation, transport and any other services you pay for in advance, and insure the total, up to CZK 500,000 online. The premium is 9% of the price. If you cancel, we reimburse the cancellation fees for all the insured services after deducting the 10% excess.

    What the insurance costs →
  • A parent or legal guardian as the policyholder, and you enter the child as the insured person. The policyholder must be an adult but doesn’t have to take part in the stay. Cancellation because of a serious illness, injury or death in the family is covered too.

  • That depends on their terms. For example, for study stays abroad Student Agency charges up to 20% of the price of the stay more than 30 days before the start, up to 50% 30–5 days before, and up to 100% just before the start. Some schools include a non-refundable registration fee in the price — such as Charles University for its Czech courses for foreigners. The insurance reimburses whatever they don’t refund under their terms after deducting the 10% excess.

  • Cancellation insurance doesn’t cover a refused visa — it isn’t one of the covered reasons. It covers serious reasons on your side, such as illness, injury or death in the family, dismissal by your employer or stolen documents.

    What the insurance covers →
  • If you interrupt the stay or end it early for a covered reason and the unused services can’t be refunded any other way, we reimburse a proportionate share of them. Medical treatment abroad, however, is a matter for travel medical insurance, not cancellation insurance.

How to report a claim →
  • We reimburse the cancellation fees — the deposit paid in advance or the price the seller didn’t refund under its terms — after deducting the 10% excess. If you get nothing back for a CZK 2,000 ticket, you’ll receive CZK 1,800. If you cancel because the insured person is hospitalised or dies, no excess applies. Cancellation fees don’t include the premium, airport taxes or fees that can be recovered.

  • If there are more than 30 days until the trip starts, you can take out the insurance at any time. If you buy the trip 30 days or less before it starts, the insurance must be taken out at the same time as you pay for the trip. In all cases, it only covers events that occur after it is taken out.

Rules and examples with dates →
  • Among other things: a change of plans (you don’t want to go, you’re afraid, you don’t get time off work), health problems that existed before the insurance was taken out (except a stabilised chronic illness), events under the influence of alcohol or drugs, injuries during races and competitions, or a trip being cancelled by the carrier or organiser — in that case they refund you.
