Sports ticket and race entry insurance

Tickets for a world championship or Formula 1, or the entry fee for a marathon abroad, cost thousands and are almost never refunded. Cancellation insurance reimburses them after deducting the 10% excess if you can’t take part because of illness, injury or another serious event.

  • 9% of the price, minimum CZK 26
  • If you cancel, cancellation fees back after deducting the 10% excess
  • Standalone, no travel insurance needed

Typical situations

When cancellation insurance comes in handy

  • Illness in the week of the match

You’ve had tickets for the final for months, but a virus strikes in the week of the match. You get nothing back.

  • An injury in everyday life

You slip on the stairs or fall off your bike on the way to work — and can’t make the race or the match.

  • A death in the family

A funeral on the date of a race you’ve been training for for six months. The insurance pays back the entry fee and the non-refundable hotel.

  • A Formula 1 weekend

Tickets, flights and a hotel for two can easily come to more than CZK 40,000. You can insure it all at once.

What the insurance covers

14 reasons to cancel

  • Your illness, injury or death

You fall ill or get injured so that you can’t go.

  • Illness, injury or death of someone close

Family, a business partner, or the person you’re travelling with or staying with.

  • Caring for a sick family member

You have to look after someone close who isn’t travelling with you.

  • Confirmed pregnancy

A pregnancy confirmed after the insurance was taken out, where the doctor advises against travelling.

  • Death of a pet

    Your dog or cat dies.

  • Court, adoption or divorce

A witness summons, adoption or divorce proceedings during the trip.

  • Dismissal by your employer

You’re dismissed when you didn’t expect it.

  • Resit exam

  • Stolen documents

Your documents are stolen in the last week before departure.

  • Victim of a crime

You or a family member become the victim of a crime.

  • Theft or damage at home

A burglary, robbery or major natural damage where you live.

  • Mandatory quarantine

A public health officer orders you into quarantine just before departure.

  • Natural disaster at the destination

A fire, flood or windstorm where you’re going.

Keep in mind

What to watch out for

  • Injury in another race

Injuries while taking part in a race or competition, in professional sport and on expeditions are excluded from the insurance. This exclusion doesn’t apply to injuries during ordinary training or recreational sport.

  • Cancelled race or match

If the organiser cancels the event (weather, safety), they refund the entry fee or ticket price — not cancellation insurance.

  • Transferring your race number

Some races let you transfer your entry to another runner. If you use this, it reduces your loss.

Stories

What it would look like in practice

  • Tickets and eventsExample scenario

A sudden death in the family before a marathon

    Eva, 35 · Entry to a marathon abroad + a non-refundable hotel

Eva had been training for the marathon for six months. A week before the race, her father died suddenly and the funeral fell on the day of the start. The trip was the last thing on her mind — the money didn’t matter at that moment, but the insurance paid it back.

Questions

Insurance questions: sport

All questions →
  • An injury that, according to a doctor, prevents you from starting is covered. The exceptions are injuries while taking part in another race or competition, during professional sporting activity and on expeditions — the exact definition is in the policy terms.

  • Yes. Add up the tickets, travel and accommodation and insure the total, up to CZK 500,000.

  • We reimburse the cancellation fees — the deposit paid in advance or the price the seller didn’t refund under its terms — after deducting the 10% excess. If you get nothing back for a CZK 2,000 ticket, you’ll receive CZK 1,800. If you cancel because the insured person is hospitalised or dies, no excess applies. Cancellation fees don’t include the premium, airport taxes or fees that can be recovered.

  • If there are more than 30 days until the trip starts, you can take out the insurance at any time. If you buy the trip 30 days or less before it starts, the insurance must be taken out at the same time as you pay for the trip. In all cases, it only covers events that occur after it is taken out.

  • Among other things: a change of plans (you don’t want to go, you’re afraid, you don’t get time off work), health problems that existed before the insurance was taken out (except a stabilised chronic illness), events under the influence of alcohol or drugs, injuries during races and competitions, or a trip being cancelled by the carrier or organiser — in that case they refund you.
